How to Protect Your Results and Support Skin Healing

In this guide, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know to keep your skin healthy, balanced, and glowing long after your appointment.

Why Post-Facial Care Matters

During a facial, the skin undergoes professional exfoliation, extractions, active ingredients, and increased circulation. While this is essential for results, it temporarily leaves the skin more open, reactive, and vulnerable to environmental stressors such as bacteria, pollution, heat, and UV exposure.

A proper post-facial skincare routine helps to:

  • Reduce sensitivity, inflammation, and irritation

  • Maintain hydration and strengthen the skin barrier

  • Prevent post-treatment breakouts or congestion

  • Calm the skin and support cellular repair

  • Prolong and enhance the results of your facial

How you care for your skin in the 24–72 hours following your treatment plays a major role in how well your skin heals and how long your results last.

Common (and Normal) Post-Facial Skin Reactions

It’s completely normal to experience temporary changes in your skin after a facial. Understanding these reactions helps prevent unnecessary concern and ensures proper aftercare.

Increased Sensitivity

Your skin may feel more delicate or reactive than usual. This is due to increased circulation and exfoliation during your treatment. Be extra gentle and avoid introducing new or harsh products.

Redness and Warmth

redness or warmth is common, especially after extractions, exfoliation, or corrective treatments. This typically fades within a few hours and can last up to 48-72 hours depending on your skin type.

Tingling or Prickling Sensation

A light tingling or prickling feeling may occur, especially if active ingredients were used. This sensation should feel mild and temporary. If discomfort persists or intensifies, reach out to your esthetician.

Swelling or Puffiness

Some clients may experience mild swelling or puffiness, particularly around the eyes, cheeks, or jawline. This is a normal inflammatory response and usually subsides within 24–72 hours. Keeping the skin cool and hydrated helps reduce swelling.

Breakouts or Purging

Post-facial breakouts can occur as congestion is brought to the surface. This is known as purging and is temporary. If breakouts continue beyond several days or feel inflamed and painful, consult your esthetician to rule out irritation or product sensitivity.

Dryness or Flaking

Professional exfoliation may lead to mild dryness or peeling. This is a sign your skin is renewing itself. Focus on hydration and barrier-supporting products. do not exfoliate further.

Essential Post-Facial Care Instructions

1. Avoid Touching Your Face

Your skin is more susceptible to bacteria post-treatment. Touching your face can transfer oils and germs, increasing the risk of breakouts and irritation.

2. Skip Makeup for at Least 24 Hours

Makeup can clog pores and interfere with the skin’s healing process. Allow your skin time to breathe. If makeup is unavoidable, choose lightweight, non-comedogenic formulas.

3. Hydrate Inside and Out

Drink plenty of water to support detoxification and skin repair. Use hydrating skincare products such as gentle serums and nourishing moisturizers to lock in moisture and support barrier recovery.

4. Use Only Gentle, Calming Products

For the next several days, avoid:

  • Retinoids

  • Acids (AHA/BHA/PHA)

  • Strong exfoliants or scrubs

  • Fragrance-heavy products

Stick to calming, hydrating, and barrier-repair-focused skincare.

5. Avoid Heat, Steam, and Excessive Warmth

Heat can intensify redness, swelling, and inflammation after a facial. For at least 24–48 hours, avoid:

  • Hot showers or baths

  • Saunas and steam rooms

  • Heated workouts or hot yoga

  • Excessive sun exposure

Heat increases blood flow and can prolong irritation and swelling.

6. Avoid Intense Workouts

Sweating introduces bacteria and heat, which can clog pores and trigger inflammation. Allow your skin at least 24 hours before resuming intense physical activity.

7. Protect Your Skin From the Sun

Your skin is more sensitive to UV damage after a facial. Apply a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher daily, even if you’re indoors, and reapply every two hours when outside.

8. Do Not Exfoliate Again

Your skin has already been professionally exfoliated. Additional exfoliation too soon can compromise the skin barrier and lead to irritation, sensitivity, and breakouts. Avoid exfoliating for at least 3–7 days, or longer if advised.

Please contact your esthetician for guidance. Your skin is unique, and personalized support ensures the best outcome.
